Kiepersol Estates

kiepersolMy husband and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary last week.  For the months leading up to October 8th, my husband had been teasing me with this surprise trip that he had planned.  He had me believing we were going anywhere from Mexico to Beavers Bend to spend the weekend together to celebrate our first year of marriage.  I love surprises and was SO excited to find out where we were going.  Finally the big day rolled around and early that afternoon we took off for our mystery destination.  We started off going south, so I knew we were not heading for the airport or for Dallas.  Where were we going?  Houston?  The Gulf?  We end up in Bullard at the intersection of Hwy 69 and CR 344.  When my husband continued straight on CR 344 instead of turning on Hwy 69 I immediately knew where we were heading, and I was ecstatic.  Anything that involves good food and wine is right up my alley, and I knew I would not be disappointed on either at Kiepersol from past experiences.

When we arrived at the Restaurant and Bed and Breakfast we were the only guests.  It was still relatively early in the afternoon, and we had some time to kill before our dinner reservation so we decided to take a look around the property.  Upon walking inside, we were greeted at the front door by a member of the always polite staff and shown to our room, the Champagne Room.  The layout of the guest rooms and the dining room is a bit awkward, but it works for a bed and breakfast.  The Champagne Room was NICE.  The furnishings were slightly ornate for my personal taste, but again, it totally worked for a bed and breakfast.   The room also had a private screened in patio with a hot tub.  Oh yes.

kiepersol-2After our host had acquainted us with our room and left us to our own devices, we decided we would make use of the walking trails to take a tour of the vineyards.  We strolled around for awhile taking it all in.  The land out there is truly a sight to behold.  It is breathtaking.  There are also many beautiful homes around the property, and we had a lot of fun discussing which was our favorite and what lot we would buy one day when we can afford it.  After awhile we walked back to our room and soaked in the hot tub for awhile and enjoyed a celebratory glass of champagne.  We owed it to our room after all, since it is known as the Champagne Room.

After getting cleaned up and dressed it was time for dinner.  The moment I had been waiting for.  I have eaten at Kiepersol several times in the past, but it had been awhile so I was definitely looking forward to an excellent meal.  We started with an appetizer of duck cigars and, after some deliberation and a helpful recommendation from our server, we decided on a bottle of 2006 Kiepersol Estates Cabernet Sauvignon.  The duck cigars were ok.  We both agreed they could use a little kick of spice for some more flavor, but we nibbled on them nonetheless.  The wine was excellent.  Normally I don’t expect too much from a Texas wine as I have not found many I like, but this really was very, very good.  Many thanks to our wonderful server who suggested we try it.  Next, we decided we would try the lobster bisque.  Wow…  just wow.  It was fantastic.  I think it was my favorite thing all night.  It was so rich and creamy, and I am getting hungry now just thinking of it.  For our entrees, I ordered the crab encrusted sea bass, and my husband ordered the 6 oz. filet.  The sea bass was good, but I was kicking myself for not ordering a steak.  My husband and I agreed that it was undoubtedly one of the best we have ever had.  It was cooked perfectly, and the seasoning was just right.  Delicious.  Dessert was the only part of the meal that was lacking, but that was no fault of Kiepersol.  We brought with us the top layer of our wedding cake which had been waiting in our freezer for the past year.  I took about one bite and had had enough.

The next morning, we were to be served our breakfast portion of the bed and breakfast.  I ordered the French toast, and my husband ordered the Eggs Benedict, and we planned on sharing.  Well, I took one bite of my French toast and decided maybe we shouldn’t share after all.  Breakfast was every bit as good as dinner.  Well, maybe not quite as good (it’s hard to beat steak and wine), but it was close.
kiepersol-1Our experience at Kiepersol was absolutely perfect in every way.  It was good being close to home, but you really feel like you are on vacation far away when you stay here.  Every single member of the staff we had interaction with was SO polite and helpful.  They were able to answer all of our questions from helping us with our wine selection to explaining to us the purpose of the guinea hens in the vineyards.  The night we stayed there heavy storms came through the area, knocking out power on the property.  The lights were working as they were on a generator, but unfortunately the hot tubs wouldn’t work on the generator so we were unable to use ours in the morning.  We were ready to get home though, so we didn’t mind too much.  I smile just thinking back at the wonderful time we had at Kiepersol.  I know we will cherish the memories we made there for years to come.

  1. Kiepersol Estates is one of my favorite places in East Texas! I’ve never actually stayed there so I was glad to hear you enjoyed it. I think it would make the perfect weekend get a way for people in the DFW metro area. I’m going to have to make a dinner reservation soon as your mention of the lobster bisque has my mouth watering. I’ve always loved their steak and wine pairings but now must try the bisque. Thanks for keeping us so well informed about all the new and exciting adventures near Tyler.

  2. I have stayed here before as well and LOVED it! The pillows were to die for. It’s been about two years since I stayed, but I still remember the bed was so comfortable. I stayed in the Coastal Room. I really wanted to take advantage of the hot tub on the patio right outside the room. So relaxing. And the breakfast the next morning was delicious. It was so nice having the place to ourselve the next morning. The only thing that was kind of strange was entering through the dining room with my overnight luggage, while other people were having their nice dinner. But overall it was a wonderful experience 🙂
